February motorcycle accidents can occur in Illinois. Depending upon the weather, motorcycle riding can occur in Southern Illinois and possibly Northern Illinois. This early-season riding can present a number of possible unique safety issues. These issues range from riders not being used to riding, to possible road hazards being present such as road salt and excessive gravel being present on roadways.
February motorcycle accidents remain relatively rare in Illinois. However, there was a motorcycle accident that occurred in Mascoutah on Sunday (February 23, 2020) afternoon. This involved a motorcycle that allegedly “rear-ended” another vehicle.
This collision is discussed in the February 24, 2020 article bnd.com article titled “Mascoutah IL crash caused by motorcycle driver, police say.”
A Mascoutah man has been cited after his motorcycle rear-ended a car on Sixth Street near Fuessner Road on Sunday.
George Fagan, 65, was riding his 2001 Ducati motorcycle on northbound Sixth Street when he struck a northbound 2008 Mitsubishi that was waiting to turn left onto Fuessner Road around 3:30 p.m., Lt. Matt Steinkamp of the Mascoutah Police Department said Monday.
Fagan was ejected from the bike during the crash. He was injured and was taken to the hospital. His injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
According to the article, Fagan was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this collision can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above.
February motorcycle accidents, as well as those that occur throughout the year, can involve the motorcyclist being ejected from the bike. On this site, such motorcyclist ejections are discussed on the “Motorcycle Crashes Involving Motorcyclist Ejections” page. Such ejections are notable in that they often result in serious injuries to the rider, and if applicable, the passenger.
As noted on that page, there are steps that can be taken to either reduce the possibility of an ejection occurring, or lessen the damage such an ejection can cause.
