Reasons For The Historically High Level Of Traffic Fatalities

Motor-vehicle deaths and the national trends in such fatalities is discussed in the February 16, 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled “U.S. Road-Death Rates Remain Near 10-Year High.”   The article discusses trends in fatal vehicle accidents, as well as technologies that are utilized to improve driving safety.

Various reasons for this historically high level of fatal accidents are discussed.  As cited in the article, more than half of all traffic fatalities involve a driver or passenger who is not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

On this site, the safety benefits of wearing a seat belt is discussed on the “Seat Belt Usage And Traffic Safety Benefits” page.  As discussed on that page, there are many benefits of wearing a seat belt.  Among the biggest benefits is that wearing a seat belt greatly reduces the possibility of the driver or passenger being ejected (i.e. partially or fully thrown) from the vehicle during a crash.  During such an ejection, the occupant can suffer a variety of injuries that often are serious, if not severe, in nature.  It is common for someone who has been ejected from a vehicle to suffer life-threatening if not fatal injuries.  Vehicle accidents that have involved ejections have occurred in Southern Illinois as well as throughout Illinois.

As also seen in the article, impaired driving, whether the driver is impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, also is prominent in fatal traffic accidents.

Additional details concerning these trends in traffic accident fatalities can be seen in the article.
