Distracted Drivers And The Injuries Caused By Their Negligent Driving

Distracted drivers continue to pose a substantial threat to traffic safety. Distracted drivers have been involved in many crashes in Southern Illinois as well throughout Illinois. While there are many ways a driver can be significantly distracted, mobile phone use – and in particular texting – is often cited as the most common reason for driver distraction.

Distracted drivers can lose control of their vehicles, which can lead to a variety of serious accidents. Among the most serious crashes that can occur when a loss of control occurs is a “head-on collision” which can happen if a vehicle crosses the center line and hits an oncoming vehicle.

On this site, various aspects of driver distraction and the injuries that have occurred are further discussed on the “Distracted Driver Crashes And Injuries” page.

Recently, there have been two Southern Illinois lawsuits alleging harm caused by a distracted driver. The accidents that caused injuries were in Edwardsville and Alton.

One lawsuit is discussed in the September 21, 2017 Madison Record article titled “Mother, minor child file suit after child was struck walking to school.” In this alleged accident, a child (Shane Allen Reese) was hit by a vehicle as he was walking in a crosswalk. An excerpt:

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on Aug. 23, Reese was struck by a vehicle operated by McGuiggan while he was walking within the crosswalk of Edwardsville Road. The suit states McGuiggan was talking on her cellphone at the time and was driving too fast for the school zone.

The second lawsuit is discussed in the September 20, 2017 Madison Record article titled “Motorist alleges vehicle was rear-ended by distracted driver in Alton.” In this lawsuit, the allegations included that an accident occurred which caused external and internal injuries to a driver who was “rear-ended” by another driver.

Additional details regarding distracted drivers and the injuries they can cause due to their negligent actions can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
