Bicyclist Fatally Struck By Alleged Distracted Driver

One of the primary traffic safety hazards continues to be distracted driving.  While the dangers posed by distracted driving is applicable to all road users, among the most vulnerable to inattentive distracted drivers are those road users who are “harder to see.”  These “hard to see” road users include bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.  Further adding to the danger is that the bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians don’t have the structural impact protection afforded by a vehicle, so any accidents are usually (highly) physically traumatic.  As seen on this site, many accident injuries to bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians are serious in nature, if not fatal.  For those injuries that do not lead to fatalities, often extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation is required, and semi-permanent and permanent impairments can occur.

A September 7, 2017 fatal bicycle accident in Washington County (Southern Illinois) is being attributed to alleged distracted driving.  The accident involved a bicyclist riding on Illinois 15 when he was fatally struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old female driver.

According to the Illinois State Police, the bicyclist was identified as David P. Weber, 63, of Venedy.  He was pronounced dead after being taken to Washington County Hospital.

An excerpt regarding the fatal collision, as seen in the article of September 11, 2017, titled “Bicyclist dies after being struck from behind by driver on cell phone, Illinois State Police say“:

The driver of the pickup truck was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper passing of a bicycle and illegal cell phone usage, police said.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal bicycle accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the September 8 article titled “Police investigate fatal car accident near St. Libory, IL.”
