The Recent Increase Of Illinois Fatal Traffic Accidents

On December 17, 2016 the State Journal-Register published an article titled “Speeding ticket numbers down, fatalities up on Illinois roads.”  The article discusses trends in Illinois traffic fatalities, the number of speeding tickets being issued by the Illinois State Police (ISP), and what factors may be causing the increase in Illinois fatal traffic accidents.

An excerpt from the article:

Meanwhile, the number of traffic fatalities statewide has bounced around a bit, but overall, the number of people killed on Illinois’ roads is higher than it was five years ago. In fact, for the first time since 2008, Illinois in 2016 has surpassed the 1,000 mark in annual statewide fatalities.

The article also discusses various factors that are leading to the increase in Illinois traffic fatalities.  An excerpt:

Experts say there are a variety of reasons for the rising number of fatalities, not the least of which are that motorists are going faster these days and there are fewer state troopers monitoring them.

One of the factors discussed in the article – and one of significant concern – is that of “distracted driving.”  There are many Illinois accidents that have been caused because of drivers not being fully engaged in operating the vehicle.  “Texting” is perhaps the most commonly-cited “distracted driving” activity, although there are a broad range of such activities.  While operating electronic devices, such as mobile phones, is often involved, there are many other activities, such as eating while driving, that do not involve the use of electronics.
