Snow And Ice Cause Adverse Driving Conditions In Southern Illinois

There have been hazardous road conditions in various Southern Illinois areas recently, leading to a variety of vehicle accidents.  Snow and ice – including “black ice” – have been named as factors in a number of crashes.

These icy road conditions have recently been cited in a variety of media sources.  The January 20 kfvs12.com article titled “Illinois State Police cautions drivers on winter weather” discusses snowfall that is causing hazardous driving conditions.

An excerpt, quoting Illinois State Police District 13 / 22 Commander William Sons:

“As we enter winter, motorists should pay special attention to surface conditions,” Sons said. “We recommend they leave early, allow more following distance between vehicles and slow down as conditions can change very quickly.”

ISP states conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly.

National Weather service officials are predicting two to four inches of snowfall for the area, visibility to be ½ mile or less and any snow that falls will immediately stick to roadway surfaces.

The January 18, 2016 The Randolph County Herald Tribune article titled “Black ice causes havoc” discusses various recent accidents in which the cause of the accident is suspected to have been “black ice.”

For those unaware of “black ice,” it is a very slippery condition that is especially dangerous as it can be very hard to see.  As such, if a vehicle runs over “black ice” it often leads to loss of control and, in many cases, vehicle accidents.

As seen in The Randolph County Herald Tribune article, pictures show various serious accidents, including car rollovers and cars going into ditches.

Additional details can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the kfvs12.com article mentioned above, as well as The Randolph County Herald Tribune article.
