According to media accounts, the accident happened outside of Eldorado at approximately 11:00 p.m. Saturday night.
The accident happened as a family with two adults and two children were traveling in their SUV on Route 45. At approximately 11:00 p.m., for reasons currently unknown, the SUV left the roadway and crashed into a concrete culvert.
As a result of the accident, Conner Schell, 5, of New Burnside, was declared dead at the accident scene. The other family members sustained various injuries described as “serious,” and were taken to hospitals for treatment of these accident injuries.
While the accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police (ISP), one article, the November 23, 2015 WSILTV.com article (with video) titled “Illinois State Police continue fatal crash investigation in Saline County” mentions the curve in the roadway – which some call “dangerous” – at which the accident occurred. An excerpt:
“There has been multiple different accidents at that curve,” said Braxton Roberts, who lives several hundred yards from the culvert where the Schell family crashed. This is not the first accident involving this culvert, Braxton said.
“One of the major problems, it seems, is that there is not a big enough shoulder so if your tire goes off it can actually pull you off,” Roberts said.
