The accident happened at approximately 10:25 a.m., as an eastbound semi truck hauling milk struck a tailgate that had fallen off of a westbound municipal dump truck, thereby apparently causing the semi to lose control.
The semi truck overturned onto a passing car, with both vehicles ending up in a ditch.
An excerpt, quoting Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye, from the May 15, 2014 bnd.com article titled “Fatal chain of events: Woman killed after milk truck overturns” :
Dye said the driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle under the milk truck and was declared dead by the Madison County Coroner’s office. She was later identified as Lori A. Vinyard, 52, of Hamel.
Another vehicle, an Oldsmobile Alero, was apparently also involved in the accident, and sustained front-end damage.
This fatal accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
Additional details – including the recollections of the accident by the semi truck driver, identified as Greg Street – can be seen in a variety of articles including the bnd.com article mentioned above, as well as the May 15 thetelegraph.com article titled “Overturned semi truck on Illinois Route 140 leaves one dead.”
