Fatal Truck Accident On I-64 In Clinton County, Illinois

There was a fatal truck accident early Wednesday morning (April 30, 2014) in Clinton County, Illinois.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the crash happened as a semi truck was heading westbound on I-64, at approximately 5:50 a.m.  According to witnesses, as the truck approached the Billhartz Road overpass, the truck began swerving left across the roadway, overcorrected, and then left the roadway, hitting the bridge at mile marker 32.

Both men in the semi died at the accident scene.  The driver was identified as Alex Delgado, 27, of Key West, Florida.  The passenger was identified as Melvin C. Lewis, 54, of Opa Locka, Florida.

An excerpt from the April 30 bnd.com article titled “Two truck drivers killed in semi crash on I-64” :

Lewis, a passenger in the truck, was ejected from the tractor-trailer’s sleeper cabin and was trapped under the semi. State police continue investigating the crash.

The tractor-trailer came to a rest with the cab turned on its side, with the driver’s side door against the bridge base. The force of the collision caused the trailer to split open and project its contents, spools of thin aluminum strips, forward down the highway.
