There was a Southern Illinois two-car crash Tuesday (April 22, 2014) on Illinois Route 4, south of Mascoutah, Illinois, in which three people were critically injured. As a result of this accident, Illinois 4 was closed near Jefferson Road.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the crash, which happened at approximately 9:30 a.m., occurred when a car traveling southbound veered to the right of the road, onto the grass shoulder, and then the driver “overcorrected” and went into the opposing (northbound) lane. In doing so, the car collided almost “head-on” with another car. It is unknown at this time as to what caused the driver to lose control of the car.
The car that lost control had two occupants, said to be men in their 30s. The second car was driven by a 77-year-old female.
One person had to be extricated from their car, while another person was ejected during the collision.
All three of these people were considered to have life-threatening injuries, and two were taken via helicopter to a hospital while another was taken via ambulance.
