Three People Lift Car Off Man On I-57

On Monday, three men, including an Illinois State Police trooper, lifted a car off of a man, saving the man’s life.

The man, identified as Ethan Asofsky, 21, had been stranded after his car ran off the roadway on Interstate 57 (I-57) South, near Rantoul.  He was one of several people whose vehicles ran off the road during Monday’s icy conditions in the area.

As Asofsky was standing on the side of the road, at about 12:35 p.m. he was struck by a car, and was pinned under the vehicle.

Illinois State Police Trooper Brian Scott ran to assist him, and with the help of two other people, was able to lift the vehicle high enough to pull Asofsky from under the vehicle.  He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the March 26 News-Gazette article titled “Trooper, others lift vehicle off I-57 crash victim” as well as the March 27 Chicago Tribune article titled “3 lift car off man during Downstate snowstorm.”
