Fatal Car Accident Outside Of Mattoon, Illinois

There was a fatal car accident on Saturday evening near Mattoon, Illinois.

The accident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. as a man identified as Michael P. Fogarty, 25, of Chicago, was driving on Illinois 16.  As his car came to a stop light at Lerna Road, three vehicles were stopped at the light, and Fogarty failed to slow down.  His car struck the back of one of the cars, and that car was pushed into two other vehicles.

Amy Thomas, 40, of Springfield, Illinois was the woman who died following the accident.  Thomas died on Sunday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Eight other people in four vehicles were also taken to local hospitals.

According to police, Fogarty was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed, and for not wearing a seat belt.
