Follow-On Car Accidents

One hazard facing motorists that have been involved in accidents is the possibility of being injured, perhaps fatally, in a second accident.  Factors that have caused or contributed to the original accident, such as slippery or icy conditions, often present hazardous conditions that can increase the odds of subsequent accidents.  Being aware of the heightened possibility of further accidents can prevent the possibility of further accidents and injury.

While there are many instances of these types of follow-on accidents, a recent unfortunate incident illustrates how such fatal accidents of this type can happen.

Annley Mercy Wilson, 28, of Schaumburg, was killed following a car accident on  eastbound I-80/94 in Indiana on Saturday, February 2.   Her husband, Roise G. Abraham, was injured and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The first accident happened as the couple was traveling along I-80/94, and the interstate reportedly had various slick spots.  Roise Abraham, who was driving the Honda, lost control of the couple’s car under the I-65 overpass.  The car spun and came to a rest.  The couple got out of the car, and as they were standing outside their car a second vehicle’s driver lost control under the I-65 overpass.  This second vehicle was an eastbound pickup truck driven by Sam Aprahamian, 38, of Valparaiso.   Aprahamian’s pickup truck struck the Honda, causing both vehicles to rotate.  According to an Indiana State Police statement, the man and wife were struck, and were thrown over a barrier wall.

Aprahamian was taken to a local hospital with minor lacerations and pain.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources including the February 2 Chicago Tribune article titled “Schaumburg woman dead following Indiana crash”  as well as the February 2 article titled “Illinois woman killed in crash on Interstate 80/94 in Gary.”
