Car Accident On Illinois 14 As Vehicle Avoids Deer

There was a single vehicle accident Wednesday on Illinois 14, about .2 mile west of Hamilton County Road 675 East.

The driver told police that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

An excerpt from The Southern article of October 29 titled “Two cited after Illinois 14 crash” :

Illinois State Police District 19 in Carmi said the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. on Illinois 14 about two-tenths of a mile west of Hamilton County Road 675 East. Xavier M. McCarthy, 19, of McLeansboro was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango westbound on Illinois 14. He told police he purposely swerved into the eastbound lane to avoid a deer that had entered the roadway. He then swerved back into the westbound lane and lost control. The vehicle went off the north side of the roadway into a ditch, hit a culvert and overturned.

There were two other people in the car; one, Sarah Heil, 22, of McLeansboro, was taken via Air-Evac to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

Both McCarthy and the other passenger refused treatment at the accident scene.
